Greenwich Greenlights More Riverside
03/31/2008

A third residential plot at Greenwich Peninsula has been given the go ahead by the London Borough of Greenwich.

  • More homes receive detailed planning consent on Greenwich Peninsula - continuing the ‘year of delivery’
  • More than 300 homes, including 92 affordable, will occupy a prominent riverside plot close to The O2 entertainment arena
  • Homes designed to high sustainability standards

A third residential plot at Greenwich Peninsula has been given the go ahead by the London Borough of Greenwich. Detailed planning consent has now been given to more than 700 homes, demonstrating that the regeneration scheme is firmly in the delivery phase.

The 305 homes that have just received consent will occupy a prominent plot on the 190 acre development site - London’s largest regeneration scheme. Over the next 15 years Greenwich Peninsula will become a vibrant, new riverside community with 10,000 new homes, creating 24,000 permanent jobs, a new business district, leisure facilities, parks and open spaces.

The £5 billion scheme is being delivered through a joint venture between Lend Lease and Quintain Estates and Development plc (Greenwich Peninsula Regeneration Ltd), working with English Partnerships, the national regeneration agency.

The plot is being delivered by Greenwich Peninsula Regeneration Ltd in joint venture with Crest Nicholson Regeneration.  Designed by FLACQ architects, it is located on the riverside, adjacent to the first commercial building being built on Peninsula Square for Transport for London. The 23 storey building, occupying a 1.1 acre site, will be mixed use with three retail units on the ground floor and contain 305 apartments, 92 of which will be for affordable rent or available through shared ownership.

The scheme has been designed to aspire to the new Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4*. The building includes many innovative technologies and the latest advances in eco-building such as a Biomass Boiler, as part of the CHP and District Heating system. Cycle storage and a Car Club are to be provided along with a car park, cleverly designed over two storeys which in turn creates the central landscaped amenity areas.  Work is expected to start on site later in the year.

Mike Youkee, joint Chief Executive of Greenwich Peninsula said:

“This most recent residential planning consent once more confirms that 2008 is gearing up to be a year of major delivery for Greenwich Peninsula. The consent comes hot on the heels of the RSL plot receiving planning consent at the end of February, and with work about to start on both the building of the first homes and the new Ravensbourne campus, there is a sense of momentum on the Peninsula that will continue to build in the coming months.”

Debbie Aplin, Managing Director, Crest Nicholson Regeneration Ltd, said:

“We are delighted that our proposals have been approved. This is a landmark regeneration project, especially given its location near the City of London and the Thames Gateway. We are excited by the environmental challenge of delivering homes which will aspire to attain a code level 4. We are confident this development will help our customers to live a more sustainable lifestyle. This is the perfect start to our joint venture with GPRL and we are looking forward to starting this stunning development and contributing to the project as a whole.”

Phil Dibsdale, Area Director for Greenwich and South London at English Partnerships said:

“This is another important milestone in the creation of a new urban district for London. As well as a great place to live and work, Greenwich Peninsula will be a sustainable community in every sense thanks to the provision of shopping and leisure facilities, excellent transport links and environmentally friendly buildings. Huge steps have already been taken towards transforming the peninsula and this latest planning decision maintains that momentum.”
