Go-ahead for Iconic New College Building at Greenwich Peninsula.
Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication has been granted full planning permission for an iconic new college building at Greenwich Peninsula, the exciting new quarter for London where Europe’s newest entertainment destination, The 02, opened in June 2007.
Ravensbourne College will be located in Peninsula Square, London’s new public square, next to The 02 and alongside Greenwich Peninsula’s new business district, Peninsula Central.
Greenwich Council granted consent, subject to referral to the Mayor,, at the end of July 2007. The Mayor declined to intervene and a planning agreement has been signed. Construction is expected to begin in early 2008.
Greenwich Council planners praised the vision for the College, designed by Foreign Office Architects, which reflects the cutting edge philosophy of Ravensbourne. It will be a landmark development building providing total floorspace of 14,203 square metres for the college, along with a commercial retail space, which will be leased back to the master developers, Meridian Delta Ltd (MDL).
Ravensbourne, currently based in Chislehurst, Kent, is a higher education college specialising in the creative exploitation of digital technologies in design and communication. Its programmes include fashion, broadcasting, animation, product, interior and graphic design.
Ravensbourne College will be at the heart of the £5 billion regeneration at Greenwich Peninsula, where 10,000 homes, shops, pubs, restaurants, cinemas, open spaces, public parks, schools, health and childcare are being created in a joint venture called MDL between Quintain Estates and Development plc and Lend Lease, working with English Partnerships.
