Up in Smoke Private View
Join us for the launch of NOW Gallery’s 2024 Design exhibition, ‘Up in Smoke’ by John Booth X CAN
Up in Smoke combines the duo’s distinctive styles: Booth’s playful, colourful design aesthetic and CAN’s fresh, irreverent approach to architecture. Bridging the area’s long history, the project delves into its interwoven industrial and residential heritage, centering on chimneys as the ever-changing but constant indicator of this narrative.
In conjunction with our 10-year anniversary, the exhibition launch will be a lively summer celebration of creativity and innovation in all its colourful facets. With live performances from Hijac and Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip, this will be a festive moment not to be missed.
Please note, there will be film and photography at this event. If you do not wish to be filmed, just let a member of the NOW Gallery team know.
Hijac is a DJ and producer from Barry, Wales. After releasing his debut single, which gained recognition on Annie Nightingale's BBC Radio 1 show, he immersed himself in the queer club scene of London, while releasing singles through various labels. His music and mixes draw inspiration from the experimental pop wave led by icons like SOPHIE and the rhythmic sounds of Darker Drum-focused genres.
As the front man of legendary UK group Hot Chip, you might recognise Alexis Taylor from hit records ‘Over & Over’, ‘Ready For The Floor’ or from any number of their seminal indie-dance bangers – including their most recent album “Freakout/Release” (2022). The man himself has released several great albums as a solo artist. Alexis plays a wide selection of his favourite music to move to – from disco, boogie, electropop and house through to techno, dub techno, reggae and soul. Leaning towards vocal-led uplifting music, he always brings a party vibe. Alexis has DJed internationally everywhere from Tokyo, Seoul, Bali, Athens, Helsinki, Paris, Brussels, Naples, Barcelona, New York, LA to London and played for brands such as Dior, Hermes, Palace, Calvin Klein, Apple.
