Discover the Design District

Date09 August 2021

Design District is London's first permanent, purpose-built workspace for the creative industries.

16 buildings by eight pioneering architects, one minute from North Greenwich Underground station. The District supports an ecosystem of creative businesses and helps foster connections through affordable spaces, comprehensive facilities and a thriving events programme.

In the centre, a ground-breaking structure designed by world renowned architects Selgas Cano houses the Canteen, a luminous, plant-filled food hall where creative chefs and entrepreneurial foodies serve up global flavours and drinks to eat-in and takeaway. From Chipotle Bean Arepas and Wagyu Beef Toasties to craft beer and cocktails, find out which street-food vendors are making Canteen their new home.

Beyond Canteen, a series of courtyards and passageways give perfect viewing points of the District’s utterly instagrammable architecture. On a more “human scale”, these low-rise, mind-blowing buildings are an unexpected juxtaposition to the ‘big architecture’ that dominates the City.

Bureau provides coworking at the heart of London's Design District in two dedicated buildings. Bureau offers flexible, design-centric workspaces, allowing members to develop their careers surrounded by like-minded individuals. With scalable memberships and business support, everything Bureau does is centred around helping individuals and businesses thrive. Bureau restaurant serves up a daily-changing menu of modern-European cuisine, barista coffee and a fully stocked bar - for all to enjoy. Open to the public Monday - Friday from 8 am.

For the ultimate ‘wow’ factor, Design District’s rooftop basketball court is a place where both workouts and hang outs come with a view, from sun salutations to lunchtime B-Ball and cinema under the stars.

If that has whet your appetite for design, check out the rest of Greenwich Peninusla's offering for art and design lovers.

With 1,800 free-thinkers descending on Design District, Greenwich Peninsula is fast becoming London’s new hotspot for cultural hang-outs where open skies reign supreme and the lapping of the Thames is your soulful soundtrack.

Design District is the perfect place for Queercircle as it places us at the heart of a creative community. Collaboration is central to our programme so to share in design district’s ethos is extremely exciting — it opens up boundless opportunities for us as an organisation.

The Journey So Far

Originally consisting of 190 acres of marshland, Greenwich Peninsula has since been transformed into an innovative cultural hotspot - a place where the creative community has continually found opportunity. After years in the making, Design District is finally here as a permanent home for those who have played such a key role in shaping what Greenwich Peninsula is today. Designed by creatives, for creatives, this latest neighbourhood is a bold and ambitious move to ensuring the Creative Industries are supported long term and have a home in the heart of the capital.

A mix of creative enterprises, brands, and individuals are already calling Design District home, from QUEERCIRCLE, an LGBTQ+ led non-profit which works at the intersection of arts and social action and who plan to host workshops and events in their space to Concept Kicks, a footwear-design research project and publication founded by Daniel Bailey that drives and monitors innovation in the sneaker industry. Other tenants include Brace Yourself PR, an independent music brand that prides itself on breaking artists outside the mainstream, looking after one of the most enviable rosters in the industry from stadium-filling legends such as Manic Street Preachers to breakthrough new talents like Bodega, Skullcrusher and Newdad; as well as a contemporary ceramicist, body artist and photography studio.

The 16 unique buildings will support an ecosystem of 1,800 creatives, including individual makers, ambitious start-ups, ground-breaking enterprises, and industry leaders. From Bureau lounge membership to taking over entire buildings, flexible workspace is available from £5 per sqft for the first 12 months, including comprehensive facilities, and flexible leases – everything creative Londoners need to thrive and build back their businesses after Covid.
