Zigzags, dots and bold colours are the essence of designer Camille Walala’s most recent installation, WALALAxPLAY, exhibited at the NOW Gallery, Greenwich Peninsula. A graduate in Textile Design from the University of Brighton, Walala established her namesake brand in East London in 2009, working in print design and abstract installation. Her work can be found far and wide: in popup restaurants, in her Caterpillar shoes collaboration, and on walls across East London, Melbourne, New York and beyond.

Influenced by the Memphis Movement, the Ndebele tribe and Vasarely, the king of optical art, Walala was selected as the NOW Gallery’s 2017 design collaborator and, true to its name, this project is centered on the idea of play. A labyrinth of luminous colour, mirrored ramparts and varied wall heights, the installation is a kaleidoscopic funfair, cleverly weaving in pattern irregularities. Visitors are encouraged to solve the puzzle, making this an immersive experience for both adults and kids alike.

We caught up with Camille and chatted colour, Japanese architecture and the Memphis Group.
